hi Redman.
Most people receiving blood where I go have 1 unit of blood over 2 hours.
For me it is one and a half hours for 1 unit, only because I have a port and I seem to tolerate it well.
I had one reaction 5 years ago due to the ongoing transfusions.
Now I have a premed which they administer through vein before blood and the antihistemine I take at home before going in.
Ask your doctor if you are concerned.
This treatment has seen no more reactions to the blood.

Hi Rahman,
Have you tried taking antihystamin (eg. Benadryl) before Tx? For my daughter, it worked so far. ALso, 1st 15 mns of Tx is slow then the rate is 5 times the weight (in Kg.).

Hi rehman,

Using leucocyte filters also greatly reduce the reactions in transfusions, as it removes white blood cells from the blood pack.. to use filter is highly recommended by a lot of doctors and you could ask your doctor if it is available :)

Rehman,
leucocyte filters.... hmmmmm , i think its available in Pakistan as far i remember i saw a kid having transfussion with that ( in ganga-ram hopsital , Lahore) , that is expensive ( as far i remember in 2007 its price was Rs.2500)...  my father wanted to put me on that but i refused bcoze i never had any serious  reaction to blood....2nd reason of refusing was ,,  that slow down the transfusion speed as well, the transfussion using leucocyte filter take a little more time then the normal blood transfussion (if m not wrong) the kid i saw there was 14 years old and  abt to cry to waste remained blood  as it already has been 7 hours to him and his blood was still 25% remaindered to go ..... as u know, i never b agree to stay there for that much long time ,, coze  i dont like to stay there for that much 4 hours r enough .... lolzzz

Best Regards

Rehman

I have a lot of reaction in transfusion. I do have leukacyte depleted blood, but that is normal practice in UK.

Also i used to get bad rash and temperature, so i used to have IV piriton half hour before transfusion, it knocks u out! but it really works, if u cant get IV pririton then take tablets, but i recomend IV.

Also i have stopped piriton now as i dont get rash, but i used to have blood 1 1/2-2 hours but i always get high temperature, so now they give me one unit over 3 hours and that is better for me, so maybe you should try 3 hours, apparently the slower the better, but you must finish the unit before 4 hours.

Hope that helps
