Yes, it is preferable to take filtered blood, as this cuts down on transfusion reactions. The only reason it is not always used is to save money.

These filter out the white blood cells. The white cells are filtered out so that the recipient is not exposed to so many antibodies, bacteria and viruses during transfusions. We have a discussion about filters at
