Medical / health assessment
« on: December 15, 2015, 02:49:50 PM »
Hi,

Can anyone tell me what kind/s of test that beta thalassaemia minor are recommended? As looking through the forum it seems that we may be more prone to certain ailments or have correlation to certain diseases. I'm going for a health assessment and they have all these different packages and kinda hard to choose. Thanks in advance.

Just some background:
I'm 40 and no major symptoms except feeling tired most the time, require a lot of sleep otherwise don't feel very function able and during and after menses I feel extremely exhausted and dizzy feels kinda abnormal. Sometimes if I don't get to lie down and must stop any brain activity ( best if I fall asleep) I feel like I could faint, I feel my heart beating, feeling nausea. Lately eyes feel very tired and bit sore, even if I've had 9 hours of sleep.  (I use to get reactive hypoglycaemia too but that seem to have gone). Ian probably vitamin and mineral deficient as my nails are so soft and brittle. I will start taking supplements that have been recommended.
I'm a mother of two toddlers and just wish I had all the energy (and more time) for them. I already have it easy as we have a nanny to help, but just wished I was stronger so that we could be less dependant.

Oh I forgot to say... I'm so happy to have found this forum. Feel less alone. All my life, I've been told by my parents by traditional Chinese doctors that I have a weak constitution and I never knew why, I don't smoke, drink, drink caffeine or soda, eat healthy-ish, did exercise. So couldn't understand why I was different. Now that I know it may be related to thalassaemia minor at least I hopefully will understand my body more and able to find ways to help it.

So a huge thanks!

Hi Chaella,

The one test is recommend every thal minor have done is the vitamin D test. Low D is very common and it exacerbates all of the problems of thal minor. Your level should be over 30 with a goal of at least 50.

All we are saying is give thals a chance.

I know a bit about G6PD, but am no expert. I have an extremely low thyroid, so I have some experience with that.
