Living w Thal and trying to get preganant
« on: February 25, 2007, 12:50:57 AM »
Hi! My niece is 29 y/old and really wants to have a baby. she is trying to get pregnant with the help of fertility treatments. Does anyone have any experience with being an adult living with Thal and having biological children? Any info you have would be greatly appreciated! Thank you,

a concerned auntie

Dear Mayida-

Welcome to the group!! My name is Courtenay and I have thal minor.  I didn't have any trouble conceiving my children...Does your niece have Thal Major?

Im sure your niece is under the supervision of a high risk ob, or a neonatologist with her needing fertility treatments.  As long as she is having her blood levels monitored (iron, serum ferritin, Hb, and hematocrit) and her spleen size and liver enzymes, she should have a healthy pregnancy as long as shes a minor with no other muted genes.

If she's a major, I'll let the other Thal Major mommies on this board take over! There are so many other issues that come into play then.

Hi Mayida and Sweetheart.  Welcome to the group!  :hithere

There are many Thal Majors who have had children, and you will find some of them here.  I have Thal Major, but don't have any children, so I don't have any experiences to share.  However, we have a wonderful group of intelligent people who will be of great help to you.  I wish you lots of luck with your future pregnancy, Sweetheart.   :biggrin

Hi Mayida and Sweetheart,

:urwelcome I am a Thal Major. I also have a dughter of my own.She is 2 1/2 years old now.  Don't be afraid to have a baby because with good care and keeping things in check, you can have a baby of your own just like anyone else. It is a feeling that can't be expalined when you become a mum and being a Thal on top of it!  :biggrin

Hi,

My wife and I had a healthy baby boy on Christmas last year. My wife is Thal Intermedia. The first thing you may want to do is get your husband/partner tested for any Thal traits. If your partner has the Thal trait then a genetic counsellor can help you understand the possible outcomes.

Where do you live ?. It is important to seek out a perinatologist and a hematologist who will work together to make sure you and the baby are monitored on a regualr basis. It is important to research as much as possible and ask questions to your doctors and anyone willing to share their experiences. This site is full of wonderful Thal moms who will be willing to help you. Let me know if we can be on any help.
Take care and good luck.

I was diagnosed with Thalassemia, but I haven't had any problems conceiving at all.  In fact, I am about to give birth this May to a son.  Anyway, maybe your niece may want to discuss that with her doctor if she really wants to get pregnant, because there are complications to consider for a mother with Thalassemia.

Good to hear from you!

According to my OB-gyne, even if you are a Thal Major for as long as you have a uterus that is in good working condition, conceiving is not a problem.

But according to my hematologist that is something you have to think about.  Because you also have to consider the baby you are about to conceive.  There are a lot of preparations and preacuations that you have to take, because the baby may inherit the trait of the sickness at all.  So you must also consider letting your partner undergo testing, because from what I know if you are a Thal Major and you have a partner with a Thal Minor or Major there is the risk of having a baby with Thal Major as well.  If you have a partner w/out the Thalassemia gene at all then that is going to be better for your baby.

Actually, I was advised not to have a baby while on treatment for Thalassemia, but still I decided to have one.  In fact it is the most wonderful decision I have made.  So it all depends on you in the end.  :wink

I was told by three regular and two specialists that I would not be able to concieve and if I did I would misscarry. I had my first daughter in May of 2000 My second daughter in April of 2004, My son in November of 2005 and am now expecting one at the end of May possibly June. I have Thal inter and i dont think that had anything to do with my problem but it just goes to show you that I am so glad that God has a sense of humor and proved all of them wrong! Keep trying and you'll get there. Good luck to you!
